Sporting Activities
In addition to the facilities provided at Le Mas, there are countless opportunities for family sporting activities in the surrounding area. According to the weather centre in Cognac, this part of France boasts the second highest temperatures and the highest hours of sunshine!
Golf:
Within fifteen minutes to an hour’s journey time, we can direct you – or even transport you- to a variety of extremely attractive and enjoyable golf courses both in the Dordogne and the Charente - whether you are looking for a weekend trip or a mid-week break. Should you wish to play golf and come home to a delicious dinner, we will be pleased to organise a local Chef who will have prepared a feast of regional delights for your return to Le Mas. Should you wish to be pampered on a daily basis, we can organise half or full board throughout your stay.
Just a short drive away from Le Mas, nestling in a valley only a short drive from Aubterre, the former cognac estate of Le Manoir de Longeveau offers golfers of all abilities a challenging 9 hole par 64 (2 x 32 course of 4022 metres). This very easy access should facilitate a ‘round before lunch or dinner’ followed by a few beers!
The Dordogne's top golf attraction, the Château des Vigiers is conveniently placed between the airports of Bergerac and Bordeaux and easily accessible from Le Mas Orival.
The Vigiers course was designed by Donald Steel, named by Golf Magazine in 2003 as the fourth most influential golf course architect in the world. The ninth and eighteenth greens are in front of the Château, and the course is designed to provide regular views of it.
There are a further eighteen holes at the municipal course at Périgueux, (6695 yards, Par 72), which welcomes visitors in the summer season. This may be more functional than luxurious, but keeps the locals very happy.
The Cognac Golf Course (Poitou-Charentes), situated in the Cognac region in the heart of the Charente is 18 holes and measures 6148 metres from the back tees (6723 yards). Par 72. It is a friendly and open course surrounded by Charentais vineyards. Furthermore, Angouleme Golf Club, known as Golf Club de L’Hirondelle, has an 18 hole course and a par of 70 over 5346 metres. It also has a 20 bay practice driving range.
Kayaking:
Kayaking is always a popular favourite with families and trips can be arranged from Aubterre and many other of the surrounding villages on the river from two hours to a full day.
Horse Riding:
Some 10 minutes drive from Le Mas, just outside the village of Bonnes, is the wonderful "Cercle Hippique de Bonnes" where you can have a riding lesson in French, English or even Dutch! You can also hire a horse or pony for a day - the best way of exploring the really stunning local scenery.
Fresh Water Fishing:
Furthermore, this area of the Southern Charente on the border of the Dordogne is an incredible area for fresh water fishing and special arrangements can be made for carp fishing at a private four acre lake.
Car Racing:
Looking for something more upbeat? The recently opened racing circuit - 'Circuit de Haute Saintonge' at Genetouze - is certainly not for the faint-hearted!
