Locally to Le Mas Orival
There are many places to go and things to do and see within a very short distance from Le Mas at Orival.
Chalais
At the bottom of the hill from Le Mas, Chalais hosts an enormous market on a Monday morning – just the place to buy those local delicacies! There is also a large supermarket with adjoining petrol station and several Cafés and restaurants. The restaurant in the Chateau is not to be missed but bookings must be made in advance as it is enormously popular with the locals!
Aubeterre
Officially recognised as the ‘jewel of the Charente’ and famous for its monolithic Eglise of St. Jean, Aubterre is just a ten minute car journey away and offers a variety of restaurants in and around its charming village square. On a Sunday morning this is home to a typical market and just a short distance away there is a lovely sandy riverside beach.
St. Aulaye
St. Aulaye also has a wonderful riverside beach with a children’s playground, waterslide and an extremely popular seasonal beachside restaurant.
Riberac
About a twenty minute drive away, Riberac boasts several large supermarkets and a wonderful Friday morning market with local produce and handicrafts – not to mention a lot of local English!
Perigueux
With its imposing cathedral, Perigueux has a food market both on Saturday and Wednesday mornings – not to be missed by the real ‘foodies’ and the perfect place to buy foie gras!
Brantôme
About an hour’s drive away, Brantôme is known as the Venice of the Perigord. Set on the banks of the Dronne, it is picturesque and delightful to visit with its small shops, numerous cafes and restaurants, including one Michelin starred restaurant and a colourful market every Friday.
Cognac
The name says it all – Cognac is the home to an exceptional product which is appreciated throughout the world with 95% going for export!

In the Spring and Autumn we will be organising Cookery courses at Le Mas catering for all levels of ability, from the enthusiastic amateur to the complete novice, so the lesson are designed to allow each participant to choose recipes that match their own skill level.
We shall naturally be covering French cuisine, incorporating local specialities and seasonal delights. Our aim is to ensure you enjoy the best possible holiday in a very special place, doing what you love best.
Our varied and well-tested cookery holiday programmes include: hands-on lessons featuring local specialities and produce, a tutored market visit, a visit to St. Emilion with wine tastings and plenty of time for relaxation, personal shopping and of course breakfast, lunch and dinner very day.
